Division Website Support

This project targets support to the official 6th Marine Division Website. Volunteers from the Sons and Daughters Group (SDG) would work with the webmaster, Lucy Young, a S/D member who hosts and maintains the Division website free of monetary charge. Lucy and her husband, Andy Young (whose father was in the 6th) do have paying clients that obviously demand a lot of their time. Having said that, out of love and loyalty to the Division, Andy and Lucy spend an inordinate amount of volunteer time working to make the 6th MarDiv’s website the success story that it is. Ironically, these two were doing the "S/D support thing" before we even started a SDG--so they are an inspiration to all of us and evoke a true spirit of volunteerism.

Bill Pierce, the Division’s appointed webmaster, is in constant pursuit of updates and additions that he would like to see on the web. I also come up with lists of things (like this!) that I’d like to add to the S/D button on the Division’s website. Poor Lucy and Andy are ready to pull their hair out trying to prioritize and interpret our requests, since Bill and I are not exactly web wizards by any stretch of the imagination!

Support Needed

We’d like a S/D volunteer support team to help Lucy populate the web with Mr. Pierce’s desired upgrades. He has a slew of photos, poems, charts, letters, etc. that require scanning/formatting prior to posting. These historical memorabilia would be a great addition to the site. Importantly, we want to capture them on line for posterity.

Some of Bill’s items are only available now in hard copy and need typing in text/word/email; other items are more complex and involve scanning and reformatting before Lucy can even hope to get them on the website. Lucy is infinitely patient and proficient and can work with the volunteers on this. Given her other obligations, she would be so very appreciative of any help scanning photos or charts, and getting files typed/formatted for web loading.

Lucy provided me the following specifics on the type of support she would like to facilitate populating the website:

  • PHOTOS: JPG or JPEG format, scanned in 300+ DPI. Lucy optimizes photos for the web to 72 DPI, but likes to have them scanned in at least 300 DPI or higher for future use (i.e., if all monitors' DPIs ever increase to a better resolution she could use original 300 DPI files to optimize to a higher resolution without rescanning material).

  • GRAPHICS: (drawings, maps, all non-photographic graphics) Scanned at 300+ DPI, GIF format. Again, Lucy optimizes to 72 DPI but would like the originals sent to her in 300 DPI or higher.

  • TEXT: (letters, articles, poems, etc.) Typed into WORD, text, or even just an email message so she can just cut and paste then for the web.

In addition to supporting the main website, we would like volunteers to focus attention on developing our Sons and Daughters button under the Division’s website. I’m completely non-creative on these types of matters and know one of you could breathe life into our S/D button. Lucy would be grateful too, since all I ever do is send her WORD documents and a vague idea of how I’d like to see them posted!

If you are interested in volunteering, contact me and I’ll link you with Lucy and Bill. We have immediate projects for you, so you will get instant gratification on this one!

Remember to periodically look under the S/D button, on the Division’s webpage, http://www.sixthmarinedivision.com, for any updates on this and other projects. We’ll also send out email updates to the group.
