Current Activitiesposted 4/27/04Hi to all. Sorry for a lapse in news regarding the Sixth Marine Division Sons and Daughters Group (SDG). My life has not been my own for the past sixth months! My parents moved in with us 1 Oct 03 for five months while we built them a house next door to us (smile). (If you ever consider this option, please call me and I'll share pros and cons). The very day my parents assumed occupancy in the new house in mid March 04, my husband's 92 year old Mother moved in with us. Life is grand, yes? Thanks in advance for your understanding. I know many of you are eager to support the Division and just need to know how. The annual Division reunion is scheduled in late Sep so as a priority, we need to focus on that event, working through the chairmen who have already accomplished a great deal. However there are several other projects below that you can support. Here's where we stand on several key projects and issues: 1. Newsletter. Our most famous Son of the S/D Group, John Wise, continues
as the editor of the Division's newsletter. His first newsletter went
out during Jan 04 so if you did not receive it, please contact Flo Dornan,
membership manager (could be newsletter dues, old address, whatever--check
with Flo and she'll set it straight). That newsletter should also be on
line shortly at http://www.sixthmarinedivision.com; webmasters Lucy Young
and Bill Pierce are working with the editor and printer to make it happen.
In the future, all published newsletters will go on line/at the Division
website immediately after the hard copy hits the street. Please explain
this to your parents as well, since many of the Marines don't even realize
that the newsletter is being printed again. As background, for almost
all of 2003 no newsletter was published, much to everyone's consternation.
For various reasons, the Division had lost a wonderful, talented editor,
and no one--until John Wise stepped up to the plate--was able to fill
his shoes. John's first issue got rave reviews, but unfortunately, many
people did not receive it. So, after some discussion, the Division's President
and the Executive Board have decided to send the next newsletter to the
entire mailing list, regardless of who is paid up on newsletter dues.
This newsletter has the scoop on the upcoming reunion. a. Reunion Committees. Susan and Claud would like S/D volunteers to help Team TN plan and execute the reunion. We have identified several areas below in which we need help. Please contact us and let us know if you can either help remotely/online in advance with a certain reunion committee, and/or, are planning on attending the reunion and can help onsite in Sep/Oct. Susan's email: separham@earthlink.net. I've listed some committees below based on discussions with Susan. Please consider which ones you could support, then email Susan for definitive direction and/or to offer ideas! Give Lucy and I till next week, then check out the S/D button under the Division website for a more robust description of committees so you can best determine your support (http://www.sixthmarinedivision.com). (1) Registration Committee and Information Booth. Help man the registration desk. (2) Hospitality Room Committee. In conjunction with hotel, help stage the traditional AM Coffee and Donuts; help set-up, stock, run Division's bar. (3) Banquet Committee. Team TN would like volunteers to help format and publish the Banquet's program brochures. Also, we are soliciting a seating arrangement chief/team to set-up the seating chart, take seating requests for attendees, help folks locate their seats the night of the banquet. (4) Memorial Service Committee. Team TN is planning the service, but needs support with some aspects, to include formatting and producing the brochures. (5) Tour Committee. We always need help during tours to ensure participants get there, enjoy themselves, and get back. 3. Standard Operating Procedures for Elected Officials of the 6th Marine
Division. There are 10 elected officers in the Division (current officers
listed in winter 2004 newsletter) and several unit directors. Another
goal of the S/D group is to shadow these officers, learn what they do,
write a SOP regarding each position, and be prepared to serve in these
billets when the Association considers S/Ds for elected positions. 5. New Projects-Division Cookbook. Remember, one of our other S/D goals
is to enrich the coffers of the 6thMarDiv Association. One new project
we would like to launch is an 6thMarDiv Association cookbook. Everyone
has favorite recipes and great memories associated with their preparation!
Why not share both with fellow Marines. Moreover, this would be a great
money making endeavor: all profits go to the Division's General Fund.
6. 6thMarDiv Ladies Auxiliary's Arts, Crafts, and White Elephant Bazaar. This annual bazaar is a lot of fun and the Auxiliary generally donates a major portion of the profit to the Division General Fund. We'd like to continue expanding the scope of the bazaar and help man the tables. ----------- This email(update 4) also will be posted under the existing "current activities" tab within the S/D button. Please contact Susan for sign-up on the reunion committees; contact me for the other projects until I get some volunteers to whom I can delegate. As always, feel free to call/email me anytime. R, Jean Steed |
