Semper Fi Marines!
This picture was taken 29 July, 1944 at the recapture of the Marine
Barracks on Orote Peninsula, Guam, by the 2d Battalion, 22d Marine Regiment,
1st Provisional Marine Brigade. This can be verified by the photograph
on the last page of chapter 3, "History of the Sixth Marine Division"
Infantry Journal Press. My best guess for the saluting officer on the
far right would be Colonel Merlin F. Schneider.
My father, Corporal Joseph John Timko, was present during this historic
flag raising at the Marine Barracks on Guam. He participated in the
assault as part of "E" Company, 2d Battalion, 22d Marine Regiment.
As my father passed away in 1967, my mother has told me that he new
some of the Marines who raised this flag, however, I am unable to provide
you with any names.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Ron Timko
