Memorial History
A memorial is something that keeps remembrance alive. WWII represents this country's most united and strongest effort to preserve our freedom and help bring world peace. The USMC was the principal factor in the Pacific War. It was responsible for the amphibious landings which secured strategic islands from Guadalcanal to Okinawa in order to prepare for the invasion of Japan. The 6th Marine Division was a decisive force in the Battle of Okinawa It earned the Presidential Unit Citation 'For extraordinary heroism in action against enemy forces during the assault and capture of Okinawa' Dick Bush received the Medal of Honor (our nation's highest military award for valor) for his courageous action while serving as Corporal Richard E. Bush,'C' Co, 1st Bn, 4th Marines, with the 6th Division on Okinawa He says,
It is vital for us, as Americans, to leave a suitable memorial to fhis gallant group of Marines and particularly, to pay proper tribute to those who laid down their lives for our country.
