Remembering
Okinawa: Dealing with suicide bombers 60 years ago.The
author of this piece, Victor Davis Hanson was named after Vic Hanson
of FOX COMPANY. Vic was killed on May 18, 1945 during our assaults
on Sugar Loaf Hill and Horseshoe Hill. The Marine pictured is Paul
"Pop" Isen. "Pop" was a member of the 8th Marines
of the First Marine Division. The photo was taken in May '45 as he
was "haulin' ass" across a piece of Okinawan real estate
known as "Death Valley." It has became one of the icons
of the battle for Okinawa Shima and for war itself. Isen is rarely,
if ever, identified. He survived Okinawa and lived in Fort Myers FL.
He died on October 3, 2001.
