The General

In walked the general
perfectly straight
immaculately groomed
and the prescribed weight.
He said all the right things
and kept others in line
he knew when to eat
and when rather to dine.

But he came to a place
to be with men he'd not lead
but with who he had fought
and he had bled.
Then no matter the ribbons
he was nineteen again
simply a Marine
with many an old friend.

I watched him from a distance
as the layers came away
he was no longer the General
just Cpl. Jim Day.
He taught me a lesson
that I should have already seen
that even the best Generals
will first be a Marine.
